Not-So-Secret Garden Open House
About 20 volunteer gardeners worked hard over three workdays (and then some) to remake our Not-So-Secret Garden. Another volunteer created new signage. We want to welcome everyone into the garden for an open house on Thursday, June 26 at 6:30pm for a community gathering with light refreshments and refreshing music by DJRandpa and his ethereal, summery and pleasant vibes. If you can’t be there, we’d like to let you know that this work would not have been possible without the generosity of our local SSA—Special Services Area #34—administered by the wonderful Uptown United, the same folks who bring you the Argyle Night Market, Winter Walk on Wilson, and Uptown Art Week.
Cemetery Tour
Join us for this very special, limited space event on Saturday, June 14 at 11am. IIT Architectural History Professor Emeritus Kevin Harrington will show attendees architecturally significant landmarks throughout the cemetery. Registration is full, but take your chances on the wait list. Click here to register.
Other Adult Programs
Include First Saturday Stitch-A-Palooza on June 7 at 11am, The Cup Collective: A Tarot Meet Up on Sunday, June 8 at 3pm, Adult Book Discussion on Saturday, June 21 at 1pm, and the bi-monthly CAPS Meeting, on Thursday, June 5 at 6:30pm.
Of special note is Make Music Day. This will be our 5th year of participating in this worldwide celebration of free music in public places every June 21. Look for music throughout the day in front of the branch. Performers include DJ Purple spinning House Music at 10am; pop, folk and jazz ensemble Menage a Trio at 11:15am; folk duo+ Paul Conley and Friends at 12:30pm; and Project Clikk at 3pm playing classical music. Join us for the fun and always good vibes.
Teen
As we await a new Teen librarian, programming in The Forge is on hold for a bit. We are sorry for this inconvenience, but expect to have a new person running the space soon.
Children and Families
June is all about the start of Summer at CPL! The theme this year is nature and there will be many incredible programs, including am all-ages Montrose Dunes Tour with local legend Leslie Borns, a Bug and Reptile Show on Saturday, June 21 at noon, a Hip Hop Dance Class for kids, a hands-on Family Science Night on June 26 about things that glow, and much, much more (like Miss My’s Family Gardening Club and Dad Time: Stories, Play and More with Tiffany on June 22). Please check our website for dates, times, and to register for these programs.
Also, please note that on Friday, June 13 at 11am, we will have Cindy Huston from Yoga Elements lead a Yoga Story Time for ages 3 and up. Spots are filling quickly, so register here.
Summary
There is so much going on at the Uptown Branch (and all locations) this summer that we hope you can participate in at least one of our great events, or just come by and say hello and hang out in our garden on a nice afternoon.
Bonus Section
Have you ever browsed our seed library? This was set up and is maintained by Betty, the admin in the district office (in our building). She recently set out a bouquet of mint plants that you can take and plant in your garden or window box. Betty says that she has been enjoying tea from these plants year round, though don’t hesitate to make a mojito or some tabbouleh.
